Easy Little Bread

loaf of bread

This bread was made by my eldest son, Hasan.  Both my kids love to help in the kitchen.  It's definitely more time consuming have them involved but I think it's a good idea to capitalize on their interest now.  It's important for them to learn how to cook.  Hasan has made this bread a few times.  The first time was when he was in Grade 1.  He had won first place in the Speech Competition at school.  He had an amazing teacher and she worked with him a lot to help him prepare.  To thank her, he baked her a loaf of this bread.

If your kids have an interest in baking, this a great recipe to start them with.  It's a one bowl recipe that has only one rise.  Hasan made this on a Saturday morning.  He and his brother enjoyed it slathered with butter for breakfast!

Easy Little Bread
Adapted from 101 Cookbooks

1 1/4 cup warm water (105-115F)
2 tsp instant yeast
1 tbsp honey
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup large flake oats
1 1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter, melted (for brushing)

In a medium bowl, combine the water and yeast.  Add the honey and stir.  Set aside for 5-10 minutes or until the yeast blooms.

In a large bowl, mix together the flours, oats and salt.  Add the yeast mixture and stir until combined.

Generously brush some of the melted butter on a loaf pan.  Transfer the dough to the pan and cover with plastic wrap.  Let rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.

Preheat the oven to 350F.  Brush the top of the loaf with the remaining butter.  Bake for 35-40 minutes.  If you would like a darker colour on top (we do!), turn the broiler on until it is the desired colour.  When the bread is done, turn out onto a cooling rack.

  1. My kids love to help out but with the mess they create and the way arguments break in, I keep them out. :D This looks like a nice recipe to try with my elder one... :)
