Homemade Tahini {SRC}

Today is the day for The Secret Recipe Club.  Each month we are assigned a blog from which we must make a recipe from but we keep it a secret until Reveal Day.  Then on Reveal Day, we all post at the same time and get to see who made what.  This month I was assigned Enriching Your Kid written by Shirley.  Shirley is a Clinical Psychologist by profession and now is a homemaker.  Her blog focuses on sharing health, nutritious meals for your family. Shirley has many South Indian dishes and many were familiar to me.  Although my family is not South Indian, Hyderabad is quite close to the south so we have somethings in common in our cuisine.  She has a number of recipes for dosa.  Growing up, my mom would sometimes make dosas on the weekend and they were so delicious, I would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I've never been very good at making dosas so whenever we are craving some, we got out to eat them.

I wasn't feeling very confident in my dosa making skills so I searched Shirley's blog for some other recipes.  I came across a recipe for Tahini.  We love Middle Eastern food which uses tahini.  I usually don't buy tahini because it comes in such a huge amount which I know I won't finish.  I love the idea of making tahini at home in just the right amount you need.  Also it is super easy and quick to make!  This recipe made a little less than 1 cup.  I used it in a Yogurt and Chickpea Casserole.  I found this tahini to be much softer than the ones I have bought.  Those were very difficult to stir.  This homemade Tahini was very easy to stir and measure.  I'm looking forward to using it in some homemade hummus!

Some other recipes that I was thinking of trying is Semolina Upma, Nutritious Oats Dosa and Chane Masala.  Please hop over to Shirley's blog, Enriching Your Kid, to see some more of her delicious recipes!

Homemade Tahini
Adapted from Enriching Your Kid

1 cup sesame seeds, lightly toasted
up to 4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Add the lightly toasted sesame seeds to a food processor and process so the seeds get broken up.  Drizzle in the olive oil, 1 tbsp at a time until you get the desired consistency.  Store in the fridge.

  12. I had no idea this is how to make Tahini. I always have such a hard time finding it in the stores because I don't buy it too often. Saving this recipe because I know the next time I need some I will be making my own. Great pick!

  16. Wow, I am definitely making this. I had no idea it was so easy to make, and I use a lot of it as I make a batch of homemade hummus nearly every week. Great pick.

  17. So great and so easy! If I didn't have a massive jar of tahini already in my pantry I'd definitely be making my own.
